Yung Lean - Yayo

Swedish mogul Yung Lean returned to the scene this past Friday with his seventh full project, entitled Starz. Buzz had been created surrounding this release particularly due to the track “Yayo.” Originally, Playboi Carti was supposed to be featured. Snippets and even a full length version of the song had been leaked in the previous few weeks with plenty of criticism being expressed in regards to Carti’s verse.

I intentionally avoided listening to the leak to get the full experience of the track in context with the album - which, by the way, is possibly Lean’s most complete project to date. The track itself is quite ethereal, with Lean’s soft vocals pairing very well with the beat. However, I was surprised to see that the Carti verse was removed for its full release. Naturally I then decided to check out the leaked version with Carti’ verse. Although I’m a Carti stan myself, I could imagine why his verse was removed. He has taken his baby-voice sound to a new level that, at the moment, is very polarizing. In this version, the feel of the track definitely takes a different turn.

It has been incredible to watch Yung Lean’s sonical style progress since his debut six years ago, and I am very interested to see where he takes it next.
