The Wizz Dakota Interview
Wizz Dakota is a force to be reckoned with in the Massachusetts music scene. Connecting the dots between deep, unique vocals and pitched trap production, Dakota is ready to take what’s his and give back to the community when he’s on. I sat down with him to give his fans more insight about the man behind the music.
Who is Wizz Dakota? Talk about your upbringing and where you’re from.
Just a Dominican guy from Lawrence, MA who is obsessed with music.
Talk about your latest project KOTAKAMI and what gave you the vision.
Um - so I started this project inspired by that hyperpop Playboi Carti, Pierre Bourne type sound they have but obviously with my twist, I wanted create a certain vibe with those retro super synthish type melodies with ignorant 808s haha.
Listen to the KOTAKAMI project on Spotify!
Absolutely — I can see the influence from them, but you definitely give the records your own flare. Where do you normally record? What are your essentials in a studio session?
I do everything by myself so I just cook up wherever in my room, my home studio, sometimes I’ll rent a hotel and just set up shop there. My essentials is most definitely a hookah, maybe some LQ not really I like to make my music sober and hungry so if you see me locked in I’m usually starving and sober lol.
Favorite snack foods!
I don’t really like snacks like that , I’m old school a nice coffee with toast something light
Makes sense since you be starving in the studio lol. Top 5 artists that you draw inspiration from in no particular order: Go!
Inspirational wise — I’d have to say Future, Young Thug, Drake, a little bit of Nate Dogg because he inspires me to create amazing hooks, Rick Ross definitely inspires me just to make certain vibes that make you feel rich and luxurious.
What is your goal for the next 10 years? What about the next 20?
My goals for the next 10 years is to obviously be extremely successful off music , I want to help my city open their ears I want to make like a museum of just the history on music of all genres to teach the youth about the art of music , I want to help out my country Dominican Republic in any way possible also.
Those are some amazing goals. I always love to hear about artists giving back and going deeper than just the music. Give us a couple fun facts!
I’m a lefty and I’m a pretty good cook on the grill.
My next question is a theme for all artists - What is your biggest strength? Growth involves action; What’s something you need to work on to reach the next goal?
My biggest strength I’ll say is my patience. I been making music since I was 11 years old an I just recently turned 30. And not 1 time I’ve shown any form of desperation. I do need to work on being more social , networking etc. I have a lot of social anxiety so when I’m outside I’m in the corner of the club just Vibing alone or with my gang. But I would def say I need to work on just being comfortable with being uncomfortable.
What’s one thing you wish you could tell your younger self?
That I’m the best to ever do it.
I love the confidence! What’s next for Wizz Dakota? As we wrap up the year what are you planning?
A lot of hits in the works. A whole lotta music and all I’m planning to do is to continue creating and continue to be positive and prayed up.
