The Shy Gawdly Interview

Written by nic violets

Shy Gawdly is no stranger to the ripe—tanjerines family. While many names seem to be transient in this community of creators who get involved for all the wrong reasons, Gawdly is showing us why he deserves to become a staple in not only Massachusetts, but the music scene as a whole. While he doesn’t have a massive catalog, he’s been able to curate and release his best work including collaborations with Millyz and Dave East on their latest joint project as well as Danny Towers. I got to sit down with Gawdly to give his fans a little more insight.

Who is Shy Gawdly as an individual? Talk to us about where you’re from, how old you are, and anything you’d like to share!

I have always been an inspiration regardless of being rough around the edges. Born and raised in Boston, MA while having the luxury of spending a lot of time in Brooklyn, NY where my pops is from. Coming from a low-income area of Boston (Roxbury), my family still provided me with an above average life. I am 23 years old, Pisces baby. And I’m good in every hood.

Watch Gawdly articulate his thoughts and talk more about his background in this raw performance of Suburbs.

When and why did you start making music?

I started making music around the age of 17 but for years id been freestyling over songs that were trending, a little after I started putting tracks on wax. I started making music because I was going through a lot as a young man that I wasn’t comfortable talking about to people, I never really been a big talker when it comes to my emotions.

What’s your favorite project which you’ve released and why?

Project wise I have not put out too many compositions of work, song wise my favorite released record is Must Be Nice which includes a visual shot by Dom Bruno out on YouTube.

What sparks your creativity and what are your essentials in the studio?

New experiences and past experiences spark my creativity. I treat every moment of my life as a part of my creative process. So much that I never write my songs or even know the exact beat I’m recording on until I’m in the studio and have a story to tell. But you already know big boy deuce and the Za are essentials and if gang want to pull up they can come too.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

My pops and my grandmother for one, but music wise Drake, A Boogie and Kevin Gates have influenced my music career.

Name your top 5 favorite artists coming out of Boston.

Since were talking favorites, I pick myself first, second my brother TDRSO debuting his music soon, Millyz, Kingfrom98, Ygizzle.

That brings me to my next question! Talk about the Millyz and Dave East project. How did the connection begin? What did the process look like?

About 6 months ago Millyz randomly contacted me inviting me to his Studio session after Dom Bruno had highlighted my work to him. Fast forward I’m working in Vegas and receive the song we worked on that night with Dave East on it.

If you could pick one superpower, what would it be?

To keep it a stack I’ve always liked Spiderman and his powers, but if I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to time travel without creating infractions within the timeline.

What’s your biggest strength? Growth involves action; What’s something you need to work on to reach the next goal?

My biggest strength is always being decisive and assertive about what I want and need in this life. To reach my next goal I need to work on the way I deliver my words to people.

Any future plans? New singles or albums coming out?

Yes, lots of big news, be on the lookout for my newest project Built 4 This.
